Lo scorso 8 marzo, Mike Starr, ex bassista del gruppo grunge, Alice In Chains, è stato trovato morto in un residence a Salt Lake City. Le cause della sua scomparsa ancora non sono chiare. Mike era stato fermato poco tempo prima per possesso di sostanze stupefacenti. Questo lascia pensare che i suoi porblemi con la tossicodipendenza non fossero risolti e, chissà, forse siano stati anche la causa della sua prematura morte.Mike entrò a far parte degli Alice in Chains nel 1987. Il periodo che lo vide impegnato con la band fu per lui molto duro; come il leader Layne Staley, infatti, anche lui aveva seri problemi di dipendenza dall'eroina, cosa che gli creò non pochi problemi durante le registrazioni di Facelift, il primo album della band. Problemi che crebbero dopo la realizzazione di Dirt nel 1991; la dipendenza dall'eroina lo costrinse, nel 1993, ad abbandonare la band (verrà sostituito da Mike Inez).Risolti i suoi guai, Mike formò, in seguito, una sua band, i Sun Red Sun che rimase praticamente sconosciuta. John Brandon ha scritto un libro intitolato “Unchained - The story of Mike Starr and his rise and fall in Alice in Chains”, in cui racconta la sua entrata nel gruppo, della sua esperienza e degli eventi che lo portarono alla sofferta decisione di abbandonare il gruppo all'apice del successo.  Non si sono fatte attendere le manifestazioni di cordoglio da parte dei suoi colleghi musicisti: "Piangiamo la perdita di un amico e confidiamo che i media, in momenti così difficili, rispettino la riservatezza e il dolore dei suoi familiari", hanno dichiarato gli ex compagni di band Jerry Cantrell e Sean Kinney. Steven Adler, già batterista nella formazione originale dei Guns N' Roses  ha postato sul proprio account Twitter "Riposa in pace, Mike: è un giorno molto triste", mentre Matt Sorum, successore di Adler nella formazione guidata da Axl Rose, sempre via Twitter, ha affermato: "Alcol e droghe non sono uno scherzo. Per favore, prendetevi cura di voi stessi e rispettatevi: oggi abbiamo perso Mike Starr. Riposa in pace, amico",  mentre Nikki Sixx, il bassista dei Motley Crue che condivise con Starr problemi di dipendenza, ha scritto: "Riposa in pace, Mike: un altro soldato caduto nella battaglia contro l'assuefazione". 

Jeff Beck, grande ammiratore di Les Paul ha deciso di rendere omaggio al creatore della seicorde elettrica scomparso nell'agosto 2009. Beck pubblicherà nel prossimo febbraio sia su CD sia su DVD un tributo contenente le registrazioni effettuate la scorsa estate all'Iridium Jazz Club di New York. Si tratta del locale in cui Les Paul, morto a 94 anni, si esibì ogni lunedì sera per gli ultimi quattordici anni della sua vita. Il lavoro è stato intitolato "Rock'n'roll party to honor Les Paul". Il lavoro di Beck è composto da pezzi di Les Paul e da standard rock e rockabilly. Ad assistere al concerto c'era una fetta non indifferente di bei nomi rock. Secondo la Associated Press, c'erano tra gli altri Meat Loaf, "Little Steven" Van Zandt, Zakk Wylde e Kirk Hammett dei Metallica. Beck si è fatto accompagnare dalla Imelda May Band, formazione rockabilly dublinese. Due canzoni sono state cantante da Brian Setzer. Tra i brani eseguiti, "Walking in the sand", "Sleepwalk", "The Peter Gunn theme"; dal repertorio degli Yardbirds è arrivata "Train kept a-rollin"; chiusura su "Rock around the clock" e "Shake, rattle, and roll" di Bill Haley. Entusiasti i celebri ospiti. "Non capisco come riesca a fare certe cose", ha detto Meat Loaf. E Van Zandt della E-Street Band: "Il miglior concerto che abbia visto in vita mia. Non scherzo. Fenomenale.”

“Ice And Knives” è il titolo dell’album di debutto dei romani Utopia: un disco che già dalle primissime note risulta a dir poco folgorante e fa capire di trovarsi di fronte a qualcosa di veramente eccezionale. Si tratta, infatti, di un autentico capolavoro di metal prog, che conquista fin dall’inizio, perché la band mette in chiaro sin da subito di possedere grandi numeri. La sezione ritmica è semplicemente da brividi, forse anche sconcertante per la capacità di tenere i tempi più assurdi ed impensabili, con performance complesse e di altissimo livello. Chitarre e tastiere s’intrecciano in trame armoniche intricatissime, compenetrandosi a vicenda in maniera perfettamente simbiotica. Ma ottimo è anche il lavoro vocale di Riccardo Fenaroli. La tecnica della band tra l’altro non è fine a sé stessa, perchè gli Utopia prestano grandissima attenzione anche alla melodia e in ogni brano se ne ritrova un’evidente esempio. Ll’inizio del disco è abbastanza emblematico, con tre brani mozzafiato come la title-track, “Criminal” ed “Escape”, nei quali la tecnica sfolgorante della band viene messa al servizio di belle melodie, specie nei ritornelli, concedendo spazio tutt’al più a qualche intermezzo strumentale virtuosistico. Dopo questo splendido avvio, la band si prende un po’ di respiro e lo fa con “Blue”, un brano più lento, suadente, melodico e di grande fascino, con il piano in bella evidenza. Pur sempre abbastanza melodica, anche se qui la ritmica è certo più dinamica e tecnica rispetto al brano precedente, è “Walk Alone”, una canzone che vede come ospite Marco Sfogli, già noto per le sue collaborazioni con James LaBrie, mentre “City Lights” è molto atmosferica (pur conoscendo passaggi decisamente metal) e si mette in evidenza per un bellissimo dialogo tra chitarra e tastiere verso la fine del brano. A sorpresa ritroviamo poi una cover di Micheal Jackson, la celebre “Bad”, riproposta qui in chiave metal. Altri brani ad alto tasso tecnico sono “Here And Now”, “Your Next Wish” e “War”. Su “It’s Not Place”, mentre “The Flood” si distingue per la sua folle genialità, arricchita da qualche inserto dal sapore jazz. “Ice And Knives” si presenta come un grandissimo lavoro, entusiasmante e coinvolgente dalla prima all’ultima nota. Una graditissima sorpresa proveniente dall’underground italiano, visto che si tratta di un disco di altissimo livello, in grado di competere con i più grandi maestri del genere. Già sin d’ora lo possiamo considerare un must assoluto per ogni amante del metal progressive. Elio F

Stevie Nicks ha rivelato che "Secret love", il suo nuovo singolo che precede l'album "In your dreams", in realtà risale al 1976. Lo rivela la componente dei Fleetwood Mac in un’intervista rilasciata alla ABC. Il brano era stato composto 35 anni fa ma non era mai stato registrato compiutamente. Ma di chi parla questo "amore segreto"? Non è dato saperlo. La 62enne cantante nata in Arizona ha detto: "Penso che sia la sola canzone che ho scritto in cui non ricordo le circostanze. E' sicuramente su qualcosa che non doveva essere e di cui non bisognava parlare. Probabilmente quella persona era impegnata in un'altra relazione; non volevo distruggergli la vita, oppure non ho lottato a sufficienza per questa cosa. Credo d'essermi presto allontanata da quella situazione". Sette dei tredici brani di "In your dreams" sono stati composti da Stevie con Dave Stewart, ex Eurythmics. "E' una cosa che non avevo mai fatto", ha detto la Nicks. "E' come una porta che si apre. Adesso capisco perché Lennon e McCartney componevano insieme". L'album sarà pubblicato il prossimo 2 maggio. A marzo partirà il tour promozionale . E I Fleetwwod Mac? "Prima o poi ci sarà un altro album. Per adesso mi occupo di questo disco, per tutto il tempo che ci vorrà. Poi, quando avrò terminato, ne riparleremo. Praticamente faccio avanti e indietro tra solista e gruppo, il che per me va bene perché mi annoio facilmente. E' sempre una buona cosa avere due opzioni".

Rick Hutton torna alla grande con una trasmissione che sarà proposta in formato multicanale, TV-Radio-Web e che sarà accompagnata da un nuovo tour live in alcune città italiane e gran finale a Londra.
Il tutto sotto il nome di Rick'n'Roll.

Con Rick&Roll Rick Hutton, storico vj di VideoMusic, torna da protagonista al suo pubblico, facendosi portavoce di un interessante e ricco progetto. Il programma, con un format originale nel panorama televisivo italiano, prevede un primo ciclo di 30 puntate da 30 minuti ciascuna, nelle quali si alternano video, sketch, improvvisazioni e rubriche che vedono la musica come grande protagonista, con una particolare attenzione agli anni ’60, ’70 e ’80.

La trasmissione è stata pensata per raggiungere il più ampio target possibile, compreso nella fascia 18-60 anni.
Con Rick'n'Roll infatti, grazie alla conduzione esplosiva e divertente di Rick Hutton, il pubblico più giovane potrà scoprire aneddoti e curiosità su musicisti che hanno fatto la storia del rock e rivivere i grandi concerti del passato, mentre i più avanti negli anni potranno rivivere momenti musicali che hanno caratterizzato la loro giovinezza.

They are often billed as “tell-all” works – a provocative description for sure, and one that probably doesn’t hurt sales much either. Whether or not the row now brewing between guitarist Keith Richards and frontman Mick Jagger is the real deal or a story that may be amped up a bit for publicity’s sake is something that fans will probably debate.

According to the Daily Mail, Jagger is furious with Richards’ alleged plans to dish dirt on the flamboyant frontman in his autobiography that’s set for release in October.

Although there have been questions about the reliability of Keith Richards’ memory, due largely to his own admission that he was having some difficulty recalling events when he began working on the book, people close to Richards report that his memory seems quite intact.

Jagger may not be on board with that conclusion, for obvious reasons. “It will be interesting. I would have thought that you’d actually have to be able to remember your life in order to write about it,” he reportedly said.

Some revelations Richards is including in the book are said to be astonishingly honest, and detail Jagger’s affairs and days of abusing drugs. Some are concerned about the future of the group in light of how upset Jagger is said to be over the new book, which bears the title Life.

Jagger and Richards have known each other since their schoolboy days but have reportedly been drifting apart in recent years after disagreements about issues such as the promotion of their film Stones In Exile.

History proves that this is not the first time the two have had a falling out, but after such a long, wildly-successful and profitable career, some are concerned that a group comprised of guys in their late sixties might call it quits for good.

Richards signed a multi-million dollar deal for the book during 2007 and is apparently quite close to wrapping it up. Jagger considered penning how own autobiography a few years ago but decided against it. Perhaps the content of Richards’ book will inspire him to reconsider that decision and share his version of the story with the world.

With all that’s been going on with 80’s rock veterans Def Leppard, it’s understandable that they feel the time has come to take a break. The group recently announced that they will be taking a year off to decompress. The group ended up cancelling a number of shows last year due to “unforeseen personal matters,” which sparked rumors that the group may be splitting up.

Frontman Joe Elliott explained their decision to take a break by saying, “After you have a hit like Hysteria and you’re signed to the corporate machine it becomes an albatross around your neck. As much as our music is anthemic rock’n’roll it’s a business at the end of the day. It’s stressful and gets harder each time you make a record. No one’s comparing this to Hysteria, it’s got nothing to do with it. It’s a refreshing change. It’s like being a teenager in a 50-year-old body.”

I won’t say I cannot relate to that last sentence!

Beyond the stress thing, it seems that the boys in the band have plenty of other things on their plate. Elliott is involved in a Mott The Hoople cover band called Down ’n’ Outz, and is also expanding his experience in business by partnering with NeXplore Corporation and signing on to the company’s board of advisors.

The NeXplore Search site (www.NeXplore.com), which will partner with DefLeppard.com, is described as “an interactive and visually engaging Web 2.0 search engine optimized for a superior end-user experience, multi-media display and social sharing integration.”

With the flood of social media sites on the internet these days and the lousy state of the economy, it may seen like a risky proposition to take a shot at producing the next FaceBook, but I suppose anything is possible. The market will usually reward innovation and good ideas that are deserving.

Joe Elliott is not the only band member who has been making news. Guitarist Phil Collen was recently married to 42-year-old Helen Simmons. Collen, 52, met the movie costume maker bride while Def Leppard was on tour last year.

Collen, who has reportedly been sober for some twenty years, arranged a ceremony in Florida that remained true to his goals and passions. Raspberry tea and cucumber lemonade were served up for guests, and since Collen is also known as a pretty serious animal rights advocate, the majority of the food offered was vegan.

Not wanting to ruin the party for those that chose to indulge with adult beverage, they made sure the option was available. “We just wanted to make everyone happy, including ourselves,” Collen was quoted as saying prior to the start of the ceremony. “We went alcohol-free, but we made sure the bar was not too far!”

Good news today for Rush fans who enjoy a game of “Guitar Hero” now and then. It was recently announced that Rush’s ever-popular 2112 will be featured in the popular console game.

As if “Guitar Hero” wasn’t popular enough, this new release brings a legendary classic rock band to the table as the 2112 opus is added to the game, something that will surely have Rush fans scrambling to give this one a try.

I have never actually played “Guitar Hero,” but have heard enough about it from diehard fans of the game to assume that any aspiring musician would love to give it a shot, despite its lack of real guitar playing realism.

The game will combine classic and modern rock with an adventure-type game mode, which includes the objective of locating “the lost guitar” in the caves of 2112. “Guitar Hero” brings a unique game play experience by combining these two genres to attract fans of the musical and adventurous gaming audience.

Geddy Lee, lead singer of Rush made this statement: “In our story, the caves of 2112 are where our hero finds the lost guitar and this rediscovery of music is much like the Guitar Hero warriors’ journey to find the Demi-God of Rock’s Legendary guitar, which has been trapped in a cavern.”

The final stage of the game will be narrated by Lee himself along with their guitarist Alex Lifeson, who also made his own statement, “I love the idea of “Guitar Hero;” they have combined two great things – music and fun. I think it’s a great way to introduce people of all ages to music of various styles by all kinds of different bands, while providing a launching pad for kids who want to get into playing music.” The rest of the game will be narrated by Gene Simmons of KISS.

Rush is obviously not the only artist that will be featured in the new “Guitar Hero.” The following bands will also make an appearance: Black Sabbath, Foo Fighters, Queen, KISS, Slipknot, Muse and ZZ Top.

So far it looks as if this “Guitar Hero” will top its previous titles, since it features more songs than any “Guitar Hero” already in circulation. Megadeth will also be recording a new song exclusively for the new title.

The game will also feature eight playable characters that you can control throughout your quest to reach the 2112 caves and retrieve the lost guitar.

The new title, “Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock” is set to hit the shelves on September 28, 2010. Fans should keep an eye out for any new updates until the release in the meanwhile.

The legendary rock and roll band, Aerosmith, seems to have created quite the buzz over the last year or so as rumors spread about upcoming shows and tours, as well as Steven Tyler’s loyalty to the band. The band had a fallout with lead singer Tyler, forcing him to take a short hiatus from the band.

During Tyler’s absence Joe Perry, lead guitarist, knew it wouldn’t be long until the iconic songwriter would return. Despite this knowledge, he was seriously considering a new singer to honor commitments to shows the band had booked for 2010.

When an outcry from the fans occurred, Perry reassured his fan base that if they did recruit a new singer, that it would only be temporary for jamming sessions and the upcoming shows. With some fans in arms about the situation, many claimed it would not be Aerosmith. Perry retaliated with the following statement: “ Well, no s***. You don’t have to tell me that. But who knows what could have come of it?”

Tyler eventually returned after some time spent in rehab for a painkiller addiction. He also made a statement regarding the feud that the band suffered through: “It was a real trying time for me. We (Perry and I) didn’t speak to each other for a while… and Joe just decided to look for another singer. I don’t know what he was thinking, but we’ve since made amends to each other and, more importantly, the band’s playing better.”

Perry recently bragged about the new energy the band has since reconnecting with Tyler, but there have been rumors circulating that he is getting ready to retire, just as they begin their 2010 tour. Perry claims he’s seen everything there is to see in the rock and roll world, and he’s finally growing tired of the life style. This statement reveals his feelings about his rock and roll life: “There are times I just want to get the f*** out of this because I’ve done it all. I’ve been going long enough to prove what I wanted to prove, to get the girl I wanted to get, to make the money I wanted to make, to drink all the beer I wanted to drink.” This statement may suggest that the guitarist is satisfied with his career and has fulfilled all his personal needs and desires, which is more than a lot of us can say.
