Cersei Lannister might think she knows how to be a scheming despot, but the Game of Thrones ice-queen still has a thing or two to learn from Richard III.
Lena Headey, who plays Cersei in HBO’s hit fantasy series, revives the hunchbacked king for a romantic date in the music video for rock band Kasabian’s new single Ill Ray.
In a clip that echoes the song’s lyrics (“If I had my way / Be king for a day”), Headey’s character performs a magic rite – involving biscuits – to revive the mouldering monarch’s corpse. Richard (This Is England’s Michael Socha) springs up from under a car park, in a nod to the real-life discovery of the king’s remains in a Leicester car-park in 2012.
Ill Ray is the opening track from Kasabian’s sixth album, For Crying Out Loud. Reviewing the album in April, Telegraph music critic Neil McCormick wrote, “Kasabian records have always sounded great but For Crying Out Loud might just be their greatest,” and praised the band’s songwriter Serge Pizzorno for “a genuinely impressive vision of music that combines the attack and swagger of classic rock with the electro dazzle of modern digital pop”.
It is Headey’s first appearance in a music video, after film roles in St Trinian’s and 300. Game of Thrones fans will be able to see whether the Queen Cersei actress has learnt anything from her brush with royalty when she returns for the show’s eighth and final season, which begins filming this October.
